North Kyle Wind Farm

North Kyle Wind Farm is located within North Kyle Forest in East Ayrshire, Scotland, transforming a former coal mining site into a hub for renewable energy and environmental restoration.

Project overview

From coalfields to clean energy

The North Kyle Wind Farm is a landmark renewable energy project within North Kyle Forest, East Ayrshire. Proposed by Brockwell Energy in 2019 and approved by Scottish Ministers in 2021, the project addresses the legacy of the coal industry by funding site restoration and supporting community regeneration. Optimised in 2023 to maximise efficiency, North Kyle combines sustainable energy generation with tangible benefits for local communities and the environment.

Environmental focus

North Kyle Wind Farm is a powerful example of turning environmental challenges into opportunities. Built on a former coal mining site, the project is restoring damaged landscapes by removing unsightly haul roads, bunds, and backfill, while reintroducing topsoil to enable future planting. Alongside generating clean energy, the wind farm contributes to Scotland’s Net Zero targets by producing 220.5 MW of renewable power - enough for approximately 183,000 households annually.

With £600,000 committed to planting native broadleaf trees and ongoing efforts to enhance biodiversity, North Kyle demonstrates how renewable energy projects can deliver meaningful environmental benefits while transforming legacy industrial sites into thriving, sustainable landscapes.

  • Community engagement & benefits

    Community investment

North Kyle Wind Farm is more than a renewable energy project -it’s a catalyst for lasting community transformation. Over its 40-year lifespan, the project will provide an estimated £65 million in indexed funding, supporting local infrastructure, initiatives, and community-led regeneration efforts.

    Key highlights include:

    • Establishing the 9CCG (9 Community Council Group), representing nine local communities in the Cumnock and Doon Valley area. North Kyle is proud to have contributed significant funding ahead of the project’s operational start—a UK-first initiative.
    • Funding from the 9CCG has already supported impactful local projects in its second year of operation. Learn more at 9CCG Website.
    • Restoring the former coal mining site with an estimated £2.6 million of improvements, including removing haul roads, bunds, and backfill, and relandscaping with topsoil for future planting.
    • A further £2.6 million allocated to East Ayrshire Council for continued restoration, plus £600,000 for broadleaf tree planting on-site.
  • Community engagement & benefits

    Community Liaison Group

The Community Liaison Group (CLG) ensures local residents stay informed and involved throughout the project. Regular meetings and updates provide an open platform for dialogue, ensuring community voices are heard and valued.

    Community Matters Log

To keep the community informed, we maintain a Community Matters Log, which is updated after each CLG meeting to reflect discussions, progress on key issues, and any agreed actions.

Next CLG Meeting – 30 April 2025 (Site Visit – Not Open to the Public)

The next CLG meeting will take place on-site on 30 April 2025 at 2:00 PM. Due to site access restrictions, this meeting will not be open to public attendance. However, if you have any comments or concerns you would like to be raised at the meeting, please email northkyle@brockwellenergy.co.uk.

    Future CLG Meetings

The following CLG meeting will be held at our Dalmellington offices and will be an open forum for public attendance. Further details will be provided in due course.
