Brockwell reach financial close on Earls Gate Energy Centre

Earls Gate 2min to read

We have successfully reached financial close on the Earls Gate Energy Centre (EGEC), a landmark £210 million Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility in Grangemouth, Scotland. The milestone was achieved on 18th December, marking a significant step in the development of one of the UK’s most efficient Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facilities.

As part of a pre-agreed deal structure, 50% of the project has been sold to joint venture partners, the Green Investment Group and Covanta.

Driving Sustainability and Job Creation

Once operational, EGEC will play a key role in Scotland’s sustainability efforts, diverting 216,000 tonnes of household and commercial waste from landfill each year. Through its advanced moving grate combustion technology, the facility will convert waste into 79GWh of green electricity and 81GWh of heat annually.

EGEC will provide low-carbon power and steam to local industries, including chemical manufacturer and site utility service provider CalaChem, via a long-term Energy Supply Agreement (ESA). The ESA is expected to decarbonise CalaChem’s annual energy consumption by approximately 39,000 tonnes of CO2e per year, equivalent to removing 17,000 cars from the road.

Economic Impact and Employment Opportunities

Construction is set to commence in January 2019, with the facility expected to become operational by late 2021. The project will create up to 500 jobs during construction and provide 30 long-term skilled roles once in operation. Brockwell Energy’s newly formed subsidiary, Brockwell Energy Services Ltd, will oversee the management of the joint venture under a long-term Management Services Agreement.

Our CEO, Alex Lambie commented:

The success of EGEC reflects the skills and dedication of the Brockwell and GIG teams and delivers a world-class renewable CHP facility to support the site. This is the first of several EfW projects we will build over the next three years. As one of the most efficient plants in the UK, EGEC boasts unparalleled environmental credentials, securing long-term jobs and apprenticeships while contributing to a greener future. The success of EGEC reflects the skills and dedication of the Brockwell and GIG teams and delivers a world-class renewable CHP facility to support the site. Neil Partlett, Chief Executive Officer, Calachem, commented:

CalaChem has been a cornerstone of Grangemouth’s industry for nearly a century. Electricity and heat are critical to our operations and those of other companies at Earls Gate Park. This project enhances our environmental performance, ensures energy reliability, and strengthens our global competitiveness by managing energy costs effectively. We are thrilled to see the project reach this milestone and look forward to construction beginning soon.

A Commitment to a Low-Carbon Future

EGEC underscores Brockwell Energy’s commitment to developing sustainable and efficient energy solutions that support local industries while reducing environmental impact. By transforming waste into a valuable energy source, the facility will play a key role in Scotland’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
